An oscillogram displays the intensity of sound as a function of time. These two oscillograms show 34 milliseconds (about 1/30 sec.) of calling for each of the two species. Each time a calling mole cricket moves his wings together, the stridulatory file and scraper engage and a pulse of sound is produced. No sound is produced on the return stroke. Two pulses of Scapteriscus borelli song and five pulses of Spapteriscus vicinus song are captured in the oscillograms, because their wing-stroke rates are 50 and 130 per second respectively.
